Aside from being a nuisance, can falling leaves pose a problem for a home or office?

Man Clearing Leaves From Guttering Of House

We’ve made the turn. As days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, we move into fall. The cooler air may be a welcome relief for many. And seeing the trees start to change colors is truly beautiful. But there are times when leaves can also cause physical and structural damage to property – especially if they are left to accumulate. Here’s what to watch for.

Clogged gutters. If our constant harping on clogged gutters annoys you, we’re sorry. It’s just that they really can cause problems. Wet leaves, pine needles and other natural debris can cause water to overflow during rainstorms, hail or melting snow. All that water tends to rot fascia – that long straight board mounted horizontally along the roofline. And it does damage to siding. Leaks in the roof can eventually lead to a flooded attic or upper floor. If unclogging your drains is not something you can do, hire a professional. It may prevent much more costly damage later.

Slipping hazard. Though not directly associated with damage to your house, leaves that pile up can become as slick as ice and create a hazardous fall risk for family and visitors.

Ice Dams. In our area, ice dams are an issue. When leaves freeze in gutters, they trap melting snow and ice during the winter. As melting occurs, water can then get underneath the roof shingles. As we’ve noted in previous articles, a slow trickle of water can seem harmless, but it often provides great damage to property. Taking care of clumps of debris in your gutters now, can prevent a world of hurt later!

Roof decay. When piles of leaves are left to gather on a roof, they trap moister on shingles, which only serves to accelerate decay and initiate roof leaks. No one wants to replace a roof before its time. It’s expensive enough when you PLAN for a roof replacement. It’s both shocking and budget-busting when you have to replace it quickly – and maybe even in the dead of winter!

Damaged decks. Decaying leaves can leave permanent stains on wooden decks – and patios. While you won’t need to call Restoration 1 on this problem, the discoloration can be permanent. Take the time to sweep off patios and decks before the leaf tannins cause problems.

A word of caution. Cleaning gutters and roofs can be hazardous. We suggest you call in a professional roof and gutter cleaner. While it may cost a bit, the price is better than risking your health!
