A fire damaging a home or office is one of the most traumatic events people have to go through. The damage can be so extensive that you are paralyzed not knowing what to do next. When the fire is put out and the fire fighters leave, as the property owner you must consider recovery and clean-up. We understand you may not know where to start. We hope this information helps. We are here to help you in every way we possibly can. Please contact us at 720-605-2994.
Immediately After A Fire. Have injuries checked and treated by a medical professional. Remain calm and pace yourself. There’s a lot to process. Listen to those providing guidance.
Secure The Site. Cover any holes or entryways. Lock all doors. If you call Restoration 1 we can help you with boarding up and/or water extraction. If you are allowed to leave the site, take any valuables with you. If for some reason the fire is under investigation, someone will accompany you to remove valuables. If you are a tenant at the site, contact the property owner. If you are the owner, contact your insurance company promptly. Provide a general description of the damage to them. While they may provide recommendations as to what companies can help you with boarding up or cleaning the premises, you may choose any company, regardless of the recommendations. The ONLY work order you should sign following a fire is one for board-up. Do NOT feel pressure to sign any other contracts.
If You Have Any Pets. Try to locate them. Handle them carefully – they are scared. Leave them with family, friends or someone you know if you can’t take them with you. If you need help finding an emergency vet or boarding service, Restoration 1 may be able to help. If you can locate a favorite toy or blanket for animals, it might help comfort them. If you can’t find your pet, don’t panic. In most cases, they look for familiarity – so notify neighbors to look out for them.
If You Have To Vacate. Bring money for expenses. Your insurance policy may pay for temporary housing – but sometimes they are slow to respond. Save all receipts. Locate any personal items you need, including medication, identification, eyeglasses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices and any other aids you may need. We also suggest you gather enough clothing for a couple of weeks. While everything might smell like smoke, we can clean them for you within a couple of days so that you have something to wear for a week or two. Please feel free to call Restoration 1 for advice on what you may need.
Questions? The restoration company you hire should be able to answer any questions you have. Here are some of the questions we are often asked.
- How do I find a place to live?
- When can you start?
- Where will my contents be stored? Can I access them while in storage?
- What do I do with my valuables?
- Will your company be following OSHA, IICRC and EPA guidelines when cleaning the structure?
- Do I need a public adjuster?
