Minimizing Water Damage In The Spring

The mountain river in the mountains. Current through the gorge the river. Stones and rocky land near the river. Beautiful mountain landscape.

Most of us look forward to daylight savings time and spring. Temperatures warm and daylight lingers longer. We sometimes look so forward to spring that we forget that the season can also bring a variety of conditions that can be dangerous. Heavy rains, fierce winds and severe weather can significantly increase flood risk. It’s not unusual for spring storms to bring several inches of precipitation in just hours! Or they can hover over your region for days. These spring rains oversaturate the ground, overfill storm drains or cause rivers to spill over their banks.

Can you realistically prepare for flooding without spending thousands of dollars? We say yes! Here are some ideas.

  • Evaluate your risk. Know your risk for flood and have a conversation with your insurance carrier.
  • Have a plan if part of your house or your basement floods. Know who to call and what you should do. Our suggestions: avoid the floodwater, shut off electricity and gas, take photos, stop any water from further damaging your house and contact your insurance company.
  • Acquire technology. Consider purchasing smart water leak detectors. We have customers who have been out of town on a business trip or on vacation and come back to a flooded house! You can avoid that scenario by purchasing these battery-powered devices that often look like hockey pucks. Put them under sinks, near water heaters, or near the toilet, refrigerators or washing machines. If there’s a leak, you are usually notified via an alarm or Wi-Fi notification. There are also more complex systems installed by plumbers that attach to your main water line. Check out these and more devices for your home or business.
  • Plan for your pets. If you have to evacuate your home, where will your pets go? Make plans.
  • Prepare your area for flooding. Cleaning gutters can help prevent overflow that may damage your foundation. It’s also fairly easy and cheap to attach extensions to downspouts that will divert water away from your home or office.
  • Take the time to seal doors and windows. Use a silicone caulk or tape to create a barrier.
  • Use mulch. Apply mulch to landscaping around the house or business to slow water runoff.
