If you’re like me, preparing your property for spring is not really a chore. The pleasant weather makes me want to get outdoors and refresh the garden or patio. And while I’m at it, checking a few things around the house assures me I’m set for the change of seasons! You can make changes piece by piece, or develop a plan to make sure you’ve covered all bases. In this article, we’ve taken a more systematic, professional approach which involves cleaning, maintenance, and thoughtful upgrades that boost both aesthetics and functionality. Your choice. Taking the time to make changes now can prevent damage later on. Here’s a good list to get started.
INDOORS
Inspect and Service HVAC Systems. Change air filters, inspect ducts for mold or debris, and schedule a professional HVAC tune-up to ensure efficient performance before summer.
Deep Clean Every Room. I try to pick one thing to do every day – or every week, whatever you have the time for. That way it doesn’t seem like I’m adding too much to my normal day. Wash baseboards, windowsills, doors, and walls. Clean or replace window treatments, dust blinds, and wash windows inside and out. Vacuum and wash vents, dust light fixtures, and replace burnt-out bulbs.
Declutter and Organize. For me this usually means changing my closets from winter wear to spring and summer clothes. In the process I do some basic organizing of: closets, pantries, and cabinets. This is a good time to get rid of stuff too. I remove personal items, excess furniture, and clutter to create a spacious, inviting atmosphere.
Repair and Refresh. I always find something that need repairing – broken fixtures, patching holes, touch up peeling paint, and replacing outdated hardware. I might even consider repainting a wall or two in neutral tones and updating light fixtures for a modern look.
Safety Checks. If you haven’t taken care of this when we moved our clocks forward, test and replace your batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. It’s probably a good idea to check fire extinguisher expiration dates too.
Flooring and Upholstery. This is the time of the year when I sometimes take up my rugs for the season. If that’s the case, it’s nice to deep clean them beforehand. I also like to take the time to polish floors, and wash or replace soiled rugs and upholstery. Ask someone to help as you move and clean under heavy furniture.
Kitchen and Bathroom Focus. This is a good time to clean out the pantry, deep clean appliances, wash cabinets, and disinfect all surfaces. I use vinegar to clean out the dishwasher and Clorox to clean the clothes washer. You can find guidance on the web. In bathrooms, clean and disinfect tubs, showers, and wash or replace shower curtains and bathmats.
OUTDOORS
Exterior Inspection. Take the time to examine the roof, siding, and foundation for winter damage. Check for cracked foundations, loose shingles, or damaged siding. Schedule repairs as needed.
Grounds Maintenance. On a nice day, trim trees and shrubs, clear debris, and remove any dead plants. Prepare gardens by tilling soil, adding a few fresh bags of soil and adding compost. Service lawn equipment for the season.
Gutter and Downspout Care. As we always note, clean gutters and downspouts to prevent water damage. Check for leaks or damage and ensure proper drainage away from the foundation.
Cleaning Outdoors.
- Power wash the home’s exterior, driveways, walkways, and outdoor furniture to remove winter grime and enhance curb appeal.
- Inspect and clean windows and screens, check for drafts or damaged seals, and lubricate hinges and locks for smooth operation.
- Pest Prevention. Start mosquito and tick control services early, spray for flies if needed, and apply preventative pest treatments around the property.
HOME AND OFFICE
- For safety reasons, ensure all emergency exits are clear, check outdoor lighting, and inform residents or tenants about maintenance schedules.
- Keep detailed records of all maintenance and repairs.
- Consult with professional home stagers or service providers for objective advice and specialized tasks if you are considering listing your property for sale.
This comprehensive checklist ensures your property is not only refreshed and attractive for spring but also well-maintained and safe for the months ahead. Regular attention to both indoor and outdoor areas helps protect your investment and creates a welcoming environment for residents or potential buyers.
